New Zealand sits on two tectonic plates – the Australian and Pacific. This explains the heightened geological activity in the country with volcanic activity and several geothermal or hot springs. New Zealand also has over 15,000 kilometers of coastline, and approximately 60% of the North Island and 20% of the South Island are mountains. New Zealand was first occupied by Maori people about 1000 years ago and only came under European influence when the Maori people signed a treaty with the British in 1840.
